Information

Exhibition of Shunzan-gama (Sennyu-ji, Higashiyama, Kyoto) will be held from April 18 to May 9 at the ceramic salon of Asahido head office 2nd floor (https://www.asahido.co.jp ) located  just before Kiyomizu-dera temple.

Current and former staff members of artisans , 14 in total gathered with their latest works.

I think it is fortunatet that we have had talented young artisans working at our studio since lack of  bearers of traditional craft technique has been a serious problem in Kyo-yaki/Kiyomizu-yaki industry.

We would like to continuously make effort to let people know more about handmade earthenware.

Its perfect season to visit Kiyomizu-dera temple by walk.  Please drop by and find those beautiful works.

On my visit to Kyoto I purchased a beautiful bowl made by Shunzan-gama at Asahido. The bowl consists of Iris flowers & has an inscription. I would like to know what the inscription means. It is being shipped to my home in California. Next time I’m in Kyoto I will stop by your studio. Thank you, Iris Fraser

    • Dear Iris,
Thank you very much to have purchased our earthenware this time. We are very happy to know that the bowl will go to the person whose name is Iris !
The inscription is one of those poems in Kokin Waka-shu, collection of Japanese poems which was written in Heian-era, almost one thousand two hundred years ago. The poem means “When I smell the flower, it reminds me a lady who was wearing the same fragrance”. A little bit sad but very beautiful poem.
Yes please visit our studio when you return to Kyoto next time.
